Beatson’s Building Supplies Targa Rally & Mornish Time Trial

Friday/Saturday, 13/14 October 2017
With no ‘closed road rally’ this year, the organisers of the Beatson’s Building Supplies Mull Rally invoked ‘The Spirit of ‘88’ for their replacement Targa Rally, a reference to the two barren years between the end of Selective road rallying in 1988 and the first Road Closure Act in 1990.
A Targa Rally is very different to the ‘Big Mull’. Instead of Special Stages on closed public roads where the Road Traffic Act has been suspended for a few hours, the Targa Rally consists of a number of smaller driving tests on private ground linked by public road sections where speeds are monitored. Anyone arriving early at a Control is penalised, so the competitors are likely to be driving slower than the tourists! ... more in the full issue

National Mòd Success

This year the Royal National Mòd was held in Fort William, from the 13th to the 21st October. Mull was well-represented in both the children’s competitions and the adult competitions later in the week.
The week started off on a high, with Janet MacDonald being awarded the Gaelic Ambassador of the Year Award, in honour of her dedication to Gaelic language and culture... more in the full issue

Lovely Weather, not just for Ducks

Green Energy Mull has just made the first interest payment on the £487,000 of community shares invested in Garmony Hydro. The Directors agreed to pay interest at the rate of 4% which is in line with the original projection. Thanks to the wet weather we’ve been experiencing, Garmony continues to perform at or above its design basis and is currently running around 25% ahead – this means that if there’s no rain in November at all we are still on budget!! ... more in the full issue
