The current 'lockdown' due to the coronavirus pandemic will affect the content of R&A, since there will be no events for the foreseeable future. We are therefore inviting our readers to contribute articles on any topic at all for inclusion - if possible something positive/cheerful! If you write fiction this is your moment!

R&A Photo Competition 2020

The winner of our Photo competition is Anne Kirkpatrick of Iona. Congratulations, Anne!

Anne spotted this moth perched on an orchid while out walking during lockdown, and her mum Carol took the photo. It has been identified as Zygaena filipendulae, the Six-spot Burnet Moth, which has not been recorded on Iona before.

Mull Moths & Butterflies

True Lover’s Knot, Merveille du Jour, Chimney Sweeper, Scorched Wing, Peach Blossom, Brussels Lace, Old Lady, Hebrew Character and many more are all species of moth that are resident here. There are also groups of moths here that are called kittens, pugs, tigers, hawks, footmen, quakers and more.
All species of moths and butterflies have scientific names which are accompanied by these often colourful common names, many of which date back to Georgian times and have changed little since. The reasoning behind the common name is not always obvious but it may sometimes be relating to the caterpillar or foodplant or habitat for example rather than the adult moth. Iona Village Hall Building Update

It was a truly joyful occasion when CorraMore Construction Ltd, our building contractors from Northern Ireland, reappeared on Iona at the end of June this year to open up the building site after its 13 weeks of ‘lockdown sleep’.
CorraMore and their subcontractors had, despite almost epic battles against the harsh elements of last autumn and winter, achieved amazing progress since starting the work in July last year – so the disappointment and frustration about having to close the site on the 24th of March, when good weather was finally approaching, had been palpable amongst island folk and builders .... more in the full issue
