Articles etc. invited during Coronavirus Pandemic

The current 'lockdown' due to the coronavirus pandemic will affect the content of R&A, since there will be no events for the foreseeable future. We are therefore inviting our readers to contribute articles on any topic at all for inclusion - if possible something positive/cheerful! If you write fiction this is your moment!

Schools Cookie Challenge 2020

The back cover of this month's Round & About includes the message “Sometimes Even Tough Cookies Need Help”. You might like to know where this has stemmed from. The answer is simply, it started as part of a conversation to do something nice for the children of Mull & Iona in recognition of the very challenging year 2020 has been for them in particular.
The Waterfall Fund
Dervaig Parent Council with the support of our Headteacher, Tricia Evans and Treasurer, Laura Mandleberg, led an application on behalf of all the schools on Mull & Iona to The Waterfall Fund. We were granted £5,000 to provide a gift of some sort for all the children/young people of Mull & Iona. GDPR made it very difficult to be exact on numbers but from new born to those reaching school leaving age we came to a total of 529!
Sharing & Spending the Award
Each Parent Council took responsibility for their share of the award. The children/students received presents including hoodies in house colours for Tobermory, those students attending Oban High School spent their share of the money on their Christmas party and vouchers. They made the decision to include the other students in the hostel from Tiree and Coll in their plans. There were vouchers to redeem in local shops, gifts including themed scientific gifts etc.
Mull & Iona Schools Cookie Challenge 2020
It was also suggested we do something to link the schools. One suggestion received was for each school to decorate a large cookie (thanks Joanne MacInnes). We decided it would be safer to make it a paper exercise. We needed a template and thankfully we had the very talented Dawn Reade to hand. Each school has designed a cookie, written a message and decided on a cookie flavour. ... more in the full issue

Mull Native Woodlands Group

This year has been a challenging time for everyone, especially small community groups like ours. With the support of Mull and Iona Community Trust, our funders and Forestry and Land Scotland we have made great progress to create the Community Tree Nursery.
The aim of the project is to collect seeds from local native trees and cultivate them to produce seedlings. There is a big demand from community woodlands, private estates and from Forestry and Land Scotland sites as well as many individuals keen to help preserve our native trees.
Forestry and Land Scotland offered a great site adjacent to Dervaig Community Orchard under a simple permission arrangement and MICT agreed to support us by signing up to this on our behalf.
MICT helped us by securing grant funding from EB Scotland for the costs to develop the site and to buy a polytunnel and the equipment and materials we need to get started.
Just prior to lockdown in March, TSL carried out the ground works which involved de-stumping, levelling the ground, and creating a new access track and a small parking area. Local fencing contractor, Guy Bolton, then installed a deer and rabbit proof fence and gates around the site, to protect the seedlings from browsing damage ... more in the full issue

Outdoor Learning in Dervaig Community Orchard

The National Lottery Community Fund £5096
Back in 2017 when the first fruit trees were planted in Dervaig Community Orchard it was always hoped that in time it would be possible to provide a space to be used by all ages, visitors and locals alike.
It is great to see Dervaig Primary School and new local toddler and parent group ‘Wee Forest Folk’ using the orchard for some of their outdoor learning and play. This inspired the Friends of Dervaig Primary (parent council) with the assistance of the orchard committee to apply to the Lottery Community Fund to ask for support to further equip the orchard for outdoor learning. This funding will perfectly complement the work already being done by the Dervaig Community Orchard committee on their ‘Apple Store’ which will provide a covered area for the community to use.... more in the full issue
